How it works
How does gabion fencing work?
Gabion fencing is made from steel baskets stabilised with posts and filled with properly selected stone. The structure carries the load of the infill, while the posts, C-profiles and cross connectors help maintain the correct wall spacing and a straight fence line after filling.
The combination of corrosion-protected steel and natural stone creates a durable, virtually maintenance-free barrier. The fence improves privacy, reduces wind exposure, can help limit noise and works well with modern architecture, timber, glass and steel.
What does “Premium” mean for Gablux baskets? It describes the construction standard of our gabion baskets, not a separate product type. Gablux Premium baskets are welded structures built on horizontal 20×8×1.8 mm C-profiles with Ø 4.8 mm vertical rods, bolted cross connectors and a complete set of A2 stainless-steel installation components. The complete structure is hot-dip galvanised to EN ISO 1461 and designed to retain rigidity and straight geometry after filling with stone.

Important: the maximum height of one basket is 221 cm. Fences 241 cm high and above are made as a structure consisting of two connected baskets. The exact division is selected according to the height, project and installation conditions.
System construction
Why does Gablux gabion fencing retain straight geometry more easily?
Fence geometry depends not only on wire thickness, but on the complete structural layout of the basket. In the Gablux system, horizontal C-profiles, Ø 4.8 mm vertical rods and bolted cross connectors work together to maintain the correct wall spacing and an even front face after filling with stone.
This is particularly important with tall baskets, long runs and heavy infill. The greater the load, the more important the rigidity of the horizontal elements, correct positioning of the cross braces and accurate connections become.
Horizontal C-profiles
20×8×1.8 mm C-profiles form the horizontal structural base and help maintain a straight line and even basket face.
Bolted cross connectors

Prepared installation set
Factory-prepared holes and a complete set of A2 fasteners make correct assembly easier and improve installation consistency.

In practice: a properly designed structure makes it easier to maintain a straight fence line, but the final result also depends on the foundation, post positions, correct installation and careful arrangement of the stone.

You do not need a complete construction design to receive a quotation. In most cases, the lengths of each section, planned fence height, information about site slopes and a simple sketch or property layout are enough.

Configurations
How should gabion fencing be matched to the property?
The depth of gabion fencing should be selected according to its height, the proportions of the property, the desired appearance and the type of stone infill. Most projects use baskets from 20 to 40 cm deep, with 25 and 30 cm being the most universal options.
An overly massive fence can visually dominate a small property, while a tall, very narrow basket requires carefully selected stone to avoid visible voids at the front. The final configuration should therefore balance height, depth, installation method and infill type.
20 cm depth
A slim option that works well where space is limited. It requires careful selection of stone grading and placement, especially at greater heights.
25–30 cm depth
The most versatile range for most properties. It makes attractive filling easier and maintains good proportions for both lower and taller fences.
35–40 cm depth
A solution for more substantial fencing, larger spaces and projects where the gabion should become a strong architectural feature of the property.
Most common choice: with stone graded approximately 63–170 mm, we most often recommend a depth of 25 or 30 cm. Larger stone can also be used in deeper baskets depending on the stone type and desired effect.
Fence layout
Most common connection variants
The fence can consist of full gabion sections or combine baskets with fence panels, a baseboard or aluminium elements. The variant is selected to suit the gate, pedestrian gate, corners and overall style of the property.
Tall and narrow gabions
For slim baskets, stone shape is particularly important. Flat-laid slate or granite setts make it easier to achieve a compact, even front without large voids.
Special 15 cm option
A 15 cm deep construction can be produced for selected projects. With approximately 12 cm of internal space, it requires an additional 1×1 cm mesh and finer infill.
To prepare the correct configuration, provide the section lengths, planned fence height and depth, gate and pedestrian-gate positions, and information about site slopes.

Where does gabion fencing work best?
Gabion fencing works particularly well where a durable, stable and screening barrier with a modern appearance is required. It can be used around private homes as well as company premises, residential developments, public facilities and other investment projects.
Because the height, depth, stone type and connections to other elements can be tailored, the fence can function as a full privacy screen, an architectural front boundary or a durable solution for long runs.

The mass of the stone infill creates a heavy barrier that can reduce direct noise transmission, block the view of the road and limit strong wind gusts.

Gabion posts and shorter sections can create a strong visual frame for an entrance and connect with steel, aluminium or timber panels.

Important: a gabion used as ordinary fencing and a gabion functioning as a retaining wall are two different applications. A structure retaining soil must be selected individually according to the loads, ground levels and soil conditions. See also our page on gabion retaining walls.
Durability
What determines the durability of gabion fencing?
The durability of gabion fencing depends primarily on the quality of the steel protection, structural rigidity, correct ground preparation and proper installation. Stone itself is extremely durable, but it cannot replace correctly selected posts, braces, connections and corrosion protection.
In practice, what matters most is whether the complete structure has been designed as one coherent system. Errors in the foundation, post layout or basket filling can affect fence geometry even when the steel components themselves are correctly manufactured.
Corrosion protection
Steel components are protected by hot-dip galvanizing in accordance with EN ISO 1461. The zinc coating protects the steel against corrosion and reduces future maintenance requirements. The structure can also be powder coated in a selected RAL colour.
Structural rigidity
Horizontal C-profiles, vertical rods, stabilising posts and bolted cross connectors help maintain the correct basket wall spacing and limit deformation after filling with stone.
Foundation and base
A stable, level base reduces uneven settlement between sections. The foundation type should be selected for the fence height, section lengths, ground conditions and terrain.
Installation and filling

Key principle: durability does not depend on one parameter. The best result comes from combining properly protected steel, the right structural configuration, a stable base and correct installation.
Ground and installation
Does gabion fencing require a foundation?
Gabion fencing requires a stable, level and properly prepared base, but this does not always have to be a continuous strip foundation. The foundation method is selected according to fence height and depth, soil type, section lengths, site slopes and the location of the stabilising posts.
For lower structures and good ground conditions, a correctly prepared compacted sub-base together with securely installed posts may be sufficient. Before starting work, it is worth checking how to prepare the ground for gabion fencing. For taller fences, long runs, weaker ground or significant level differences, a foundation solution tailored to the specific site conditions is usually recommended.
When can a compacted sub-base be enough?
For lower fences, stable ground and shorter sections, a level, well-compacted sub-base may be considered. The posts must still be correctly positioned and securely installed.
When is a foundation recommended?
A foundation is particularly important for tall and heavy structures, long fence runs, weaker ground, sloping sites and areas around gates, pedestrian gates and corners.
What does correct foundation preparation achieve?
A stable base helps maintain level, a straight fence line and even support for the baskets. It also reduces the risk of settlement, leaning or differences between adjacent sections.
Important: the foundation solution should take local ground conditions and structural loads into account. With unusual soil conditions, significant fence height or a retaining function, the solution should be selected by a suitably qualified professional.
Installation and stabilisation
How should stabilising posts be positioned in gabion fencing?
Stabilising posts should be positioned along the axis of the foundation and fence, approximately 30 cm from the ends of each section and no more than 125 cm apart. Correct post positioning helps maintain a straight fence line, structural rigidity and even basket geometry after filling with stone.
Key installation rules
- Posts on the structural axis: they should be positioned as centrally as possible in relation to the foundation and fence depth.
- Approximately 30 cm from the end: the outer post of each straight section is positioned about 30 cm from the end of that section.
- Maximum 125 cm: the spacing between consecutive stabilising posts should not exceed 125 cm.
- Even spacing: posts between the outer points should be distributed as evenly as possible along the full length of the section.
- Two posts at an L-shaped corner: each fence section receives its own post, positioned approximately 30 cm from the end of that section.
A single shared post placed exactly in the corner does not provide the same support for both sections as two separate posts aligned with the axis of each section.
Straight fence line
Even post spacing limits local deviations and helps maintain a consistent line along the full length of the fence.
Stable section ends
Setting the outer posts back from the ends provides correct basket support without positioning the stabilising structure directly at the basket edge.
Correct corners
Two separate posts at a corner allow each section to be stabilised according to its own direction and foundation axis.

Standard and MAX post clamps
Standard clamp is intended for typical Gablux system applications. MAX clamp has a reinforced design and can be used in projects where additional rigidity or easier installation control is required.
Standard and reinforced cover
The standard cover closes the top of the basket with a simpler arrangement of elements. The reinforced cover uses a denser layout, visually closer to the mesh used in the gabion walls. The variant is selected according to the structure and desired appearance.

Stone infill
What stone should you choose for gabion fencing?
Stone for gabion fencing should be durable, weather-resistant and correctly matched to the mesh size and basket depth. Common choices include granite, basalt, dolomite, sandstone, slate, rounded stone or stone setts.
The selected infill affects not only the appearance of the fence, but also how easily the basket can be filled, the amount of visible voids and whether an even front face can be achieved. With narrow baskets, stone shape is especially important because large, irregular pieces can be difficult to arrange neatly.
Stone grading
For the standard 5×20 cm mesh, we most often use stone with a grading of approximately 63–170 mm. Larger pieces can also be used in deeper baskets depending on their shape and stone type.
Infill shape
Angular stone interlocks more easily inside the basket, while rounded stone gives a softer, more natural appearance. Slate and stone setts can be laid in layers to achieve a more even front.
Colour and appearance
Light stone brightens the fence and works well with modern facades. Grey granite is a versatile choice, while dark basalt creates a strong contrast with steel and garden planting.
Stone for 25–30 cm deep baskets
This is the most versatile basket-depth range. It allows many popular stones in the approximately 63–170 mm grading and makes it relatively easy to achieve a compact, attractive fill.
Stone for tall and narrow baskets
With a 20 cm basket depth and greater height, it is worth using material that can be arranged more regularly. Flat-laid slate, granite setts or stone with a repeatable shape work well.
Practical rule: before purchasing a large quantity, it is worth checking our detailed guidance on choosing stone for gabions. The stone should not be able to fall freely through the mesh, but it should not be so large that it prevents even filling between the basket walls. It is worth testing the final choice on a small sample first.
