How to match gabion fencing to your property

A sensible gabion fence thickness is usually within 20–40 cm and it’s worth choosing it in proportion to the space. Low (e.g. 120 cm) and very thick (e.g. 40 cm) fences can look heavy. On the other hand, very tall and narrow gabions are harder to fill neatly without voids — in that case, choosing the right infill matters most.

A universal thickness

For stone size 60–170 we most often recommend 25–30 cm. It makes neat filling easier and delivers a premium finish at any height.

Tall and narrow gabions

To avoid voids, choose an infill that “faces” well on the front: flat-laid slate or granite setts are common choices.

15 cm option (special)

Technically, a 15 cm thick fence (about 12 cm inside) is possible, but it requires a special 1×1 cm mesh and filling with a finer aggregate. This is for specific projects only.

For thicker fences, 60–210 stone is also acceptable. Quoting is fastest when you provide: section lengths, height and preferred thickness. If your site has slopes — add that information.

In practice, durability depends on a few elements combined: steel protection, structural rigidity and correct installation. The stone mass won’t “fix” geometry mistakes — that’s why stiffeners and connections that keep wall spacing after filling are so important.

Corrosion protection

Steel is hot-dip galvanised to EN ISO 1461 (approx. 70 µm), and if needed, RAL powder coating is available. This is key for fences used for years without seasonal maintenance.

Rigidity & geometry after filling

The “straight wall” effect comes from: C-profiles, bolted cross connectors and wall spacing control. Thanks to this, the fence holds dimensions and the front stays flat even at higher heights.

Installation

Do gabion fences require foundations?

The answer is: it depends on height, soil and installation conditions. Low sections on stable ground can be installed on a well-prepared sub-base, but for greater heights and more demanding conditions, a foundation or a system solution is usually recommended to stabilise the fence line.

When a sub-base is enough

Stable soil, shorter sections, lower heights. Key is levelling and line control, so the basket doesn’t settle unevenly.

Higher fences, long runs, weaker/uncertain bearing capacity, slopes and critical points (corners, gates, entrances).

What proper preparation gives you

The price includes a complete set of ready-to-install components: baskets/panels, stabilising posts, post clamps, bracing, mounting plates and fasteners. Mounting holes are prepared during production, which makes installation easier and reduces the risk of damaging the zinc coating. The fence structure is based on gabion baskets , which provide rigidity, geometry control and durability for the whole system.

Standard clamp vs MAX

Standard is designed to be sufficient for typical Gablux applications. MAX has a different build, which translates into noticeably improved rigidity — mainly in unusual projects (very large heights, suspended structures). In practice, MAX can be an add-on that slightly simplifies installation.

Top covers – 2 options

Two versions are available: standard cover (without gabion-like openings) and a reinforced cover, which provides openings similar in size to the gabion mesh. The choice depends on the project and the desired visual effect.

Infill

What stone and what grading for gabion fencing?

Common choices include river stones, granite, basalt, sandstone or slate. The key is grading matched to the mesh, because that determines compactness and a flat front face. For 5×20 gabion fencing we most often recommend 60–170. For thicker fences, 60–210 is also acceptable.

Visual effect

Light and grey stones give a clean, modern look. Dark stone emphasises contrast and a premium finish.

No voids
