Welded 5×20 gabion baskets – applications, sizes and choosing the right variant
Gabion baskets are steel structures filled with stone (or other materials), used for fences, retaining walls, slope reinforcement, privacy screens, planters, benches and decorative walls. The final result depends on basket rigidity, corrosion protection quality and the method used to connect the walls.
Structural stability
Thick Ø 4.8 mm rods and horizontal C-profiles create a rigid frame resistant to deformation.

Why are Gablux gabion baskets so durable?
1) S235JR-Si+AR steel + stronger Ø 4.8 mm rod
High-grade structural steel with increased strength helps carry both static and dynamic loads. This matters in structures that, once filled, work under the weight of the infill and changing weather conditions. In addition, the Ø 4.8 mm rod alone is more than 2× stiffer than Ø 4.0 mm and offers around 45% greater tensile strength – which significantly strengthens elements exposed to load and movement.
2) Vertical rod Ø 4.8 mm + horizontal C-profile + welding
In our technology, the vertical rods pass through dedicated holes in the horizontal C-profile, and then the entire assembly is welded. This helps the basket hold its geometry and maintain a clean, even look once filled. This design can be up to 70% stronger than welded wire panel baskets made only from thin rods.
3) Bolted connectors (no compromises)
At Gablux, we do not use click-fix connectors, hooks, clips or spirals. We use only bolted cross connectors made from C-profiles and M5 stainless steel bolts (A2). These components keep the wall spacing correct and prevent the basket from “bulging” under the pressure of the stone fill.
4) Hot-dip galvanizing to EN ISO 1461
Our corrosion protection is done by hot-dip galvanizing in accordance with EN ISO 1461. It is one of the most durable methods of corrosion protection for outdoor steel structures.
Taller gabions (60 cm and above) require greater structural stability – that is why the wall connection method is critical. If you send us the dimensions and intended use (fence / wall / planter), we will select the right connector and post layout.

Corrosion protection
Zinc coating durability: how coating thickness affects the service life of gabion baskets
Gabion baskets are exposed to outdoor conditions for many years, which is why protecting the steel against corrosion is essential. At Gablux, we use hot-dip galvanizing to EN ISO 1461. The zinc coating provides both barrier protection and sacrificial protection – in practice this means that zinc corrodes first, and only after it is consumed does the steel begin to corrode.
1) Why does zinc thickness matter?
Zinc coating loss can be described as thickness loss over time (usually in µm/year). The thicker the coating (for example ~70 µm), the longer the zinc acts as a protective layer and the longer the real corrosion resistance in outdoor conditions.
2) How does the coating wear away?
Once exposed to the weather, zinc forms a stable layer of corrosion products (known as a patina), which slows down further zinc loss. In practice, long-term average coating loss depends on the environment (humidity, salinity, pollution levels).
Simple calculation model: estimated protection life ≈ coating thickness (µm) ÷ loss rate (µm/year). This is a practical way to compare protective finishes, especially for gabion fence systems and retaining walls.

Stabilisation
Post clamps – two stabilisation variants
Gabion baskets are mounted to stabilising posts. We offer two types of clamps, selected according to basket height and intended use (typical fencing vs. higher-load structures).

The Standard version is sufficient for most typical projects. MAX mainly offers an advantage in unusual or heavily loaded structures.

Gabion basket variants
Premium basket
The standard gabion basket model: four bolted walls (front, back and two sides), built around thick rods and C-profiles. This is the most commonly chosen variant – highly resistant to deformation and visually consistent for years.
Premium MAX basket
A spatial variant with part of the structure welded during production (some cross bracing is also welded in place). The basket is supplied ready to be attached to the stabilising posts – only the fixing elements to the posts remain to be bolted on. It is often selected for projects that require maximum rigidity.

Finishes and additional options
RAL powder coating
The standard finish is hot-dip galvanizing. You can also order zinc + powder coating in any RAL colour (matt / semi-matt / textured) to match the baskets to your façade and joinery.
Basket covers
Covers are available as an additional option – for planters, benches, fences and retaining walls. The right choice depends on the intended function and desired visual effect.
Cut-outs for utilities
Precise factory-made cut-outs for gas boxes, electrical/technical cabinets and letterboxes (including through-box solutions). These are made during production without compromising the galvanized protection.
If the basket is intended as a decorative feature (for example a planter or bench), it is worth defining the final finish and the way the infill will be arranged.
