Gabion facades – a contemporary facade solution for the 21st century

The facade is the visual identity of a building. Today, alongside render, timber and HPL panels, more and more investors choose solutions that give a building a distinctive character while also offering long-term durability without the need for regular maintenance. Facades made from gabion baskets are one of the more interesting options: they combine steel and natural infill such as stone, brick or granite setts, and the modular system makes it possible to achieve a highly individual final effect.

Why are Gablux gabion facades so durable?

1) Ø 4.8 mm vertical rods + horizontal C-profile + welding

In our system, the vertical rods pass through dedicated holes in the horizontal C-profile, and the structure is then welded. This design can be up to 70% stronger than standard welded-mesh baskets made only from thin rods.

2) Ø 4.8 mm rod is clearly stronger than Ø 4.0 mm

A Ø 4.8 mm rod is more than 2× stiffer than Ø 4.0 mm. It also offers around 45% greater tensile strength, which matters in elements exposed to structural movement and loads, for example larger façade modules.

3) Bolted cross connectors = a stable front face

We use bolted cross connectors that tie the front wall to the rear wall. They provide around 50% better holding performance and nearly 70% better rigidity for the whole structure, helping to keep the front face even and reducing the risk of basket movement after filling.

4) Larger modules = faster installation and lower labour cost

Compared with welded-mesh baskets assembled with spirals or springs, a façade built using PREMIUM baskets can be up to twice as strong after installation, while installation speed is often higher because the modules can cover a larger area. This shortens installation time and can reduce labour costs for the investor.

How are gabion facades installed?

A gabion facade is usually anchored to the wall or to a prepared subframe. The modules are joined into one system, while bolted connectors ensure stability. The fill material is selected based on the desired visual effect and the basket size, whether stone, brick, granite setts or roof tiles. Installation over insulation as a façade cladding system is also possible.

1) Module design

We select basket dimensions and module divisions so they fit the building form, corners and openings.

2) Anchoring and levelling

Modules are fixed to the wall or subframe. Straight alignment and stable fixing are essential.

3) Filling and closure

The selected fraction and the way the fill is placed determine the final visual effect and the flush appearance of the front face.
