Installation of gabion baskets and gabion fencing – step by step

Below you will find a clear guide covering: ground preparation, basket assembly, fixing to posts, installation of connectors and filling with stone aggregate. This page is prepared for both contractors and investors – concise, practical and easy to follow.

Important

Safety

Warning: Install the system wearing protective gloves and safety glasses. Steel components may have sharp edges. The stability of the structure depends on proper foundation and fixing.

Use only components intended for gabions (panels, posts, accessories).
Do not fill the basket before it is fully bolted and stabilised.
Tighten connectors and clamps firmly (according to the guide).

Ground

Ground preparation

Mark the line of the fence / wall, check the ground level and choose the foundation option suitable for the site conditions.

Option A – without a strip foundation

Compact the base layer (gravel / crushed stone / aggregate).
Make post holes (a ground auger is recommended).
Concrete the posts vertically below the frost line.

Option B – strip foundation

Make a foundation strip approx. 40–60 cm thick.
Set the stabilising posts deeper into the concrete.
After the concrete has cured, proceed with basket installation.

Tip: If there is an existing strip foundation, the stabilising posts can be prepared for bolting down on special 15×15 cm base plates.

Installation

Step-by-step installation

Step 1: Mark the fence line.

Step 2: Install the stabilising posts.

Step 3: Install the front panel.

Step 4: Bolt on the two side panels.

Step 5: Close the structure with the rear panel.

Step 6: Bolt the walls together with M5×16 bolts.

Step 7: Position the basket and proceed with fixing it to the posts.

Step 8: Fill the basket with stone aggregate.

Install the next baskets in the same way, maintaining level and alignment along the fence line.

Stabilisation

Fixing the basket to the stabilising post

For a secure basket-to-post connection use: connector, post clamp, M8×100 bolt (full thread), enlarged washers and a nut.

Drill through the post at the height of the horizontal strip of the basket.
Baskets up to H = 100 cm – 1 fixing point.
Baskets above H = 100 cm – 2 fixing points.
Tighten the connection firmly until full stability is achieved.

Diagram of fixing a basket to a stabilising post — When fixing the basket to the post, the connector is bolted directly to the gabion mesh using dedicated mounting plates. This eliminates the need to align precisely with the factory holes in the horizontal C-profile strip, making fence installation much easier and faster.

Stiffening

Connectors (cross braces)

Connectors bolt the front wall of the basket to the rear wall and provide stiffness. Install them in the factory holes or anywhere along the horizontal strip using a plate.

Tip: Position the connectors symmetrically. First stabilise the basket on the posts, then tighten the connectors.

Stone aggregate

Filling the basket with stone aggregate

Start filling only after the basket has been fully bolted and stabilised.
Protect the sides (cardboard / styrofoam / plexiglass) so the stone does not strike the components.
Fill the stone gradually (ideally with buckets) and continuously adjust its placement.
Avoid hitting the connectors — this may damage them.

The difference between a basket that is simply “filled” and one with carefully hand-arranged stone is significant — it is worth taking the time for a better visual result.

Details

Connections and special elements

40×15 mm plate (double hole)

Used for building walls longer than 250 cm in one continuous run and for connecting a gabion base section to a taller basket.

Gabion clamps

Used for bolting two baskets together and for fixing fence panels to a basket. Available lengths: 3–3.5 cm (standard) and 6 cm (90° corner).

Corner finishing elements (LUX version) are used for a clean visual finish of basket corners – installed with M5×16 bolts.

Installation diagrams

When connecting a gabion base section to a gabion post, the side basket walls are not duplicated. The taller basket (gabion post) consists of four full walls, while the base sections are bolted to the side of the post and include only the front and rear walls. This solution ensures a compact and aesthetic connection, and after filling with stone the joints are almost invisible.
